International Jazz Day on Thursday, April 30 2015.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated the annual event to highlight the role jazz plays in uniting people internationally.
CityScape Phoenix will host the “Real Jazz” outdoor concert from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday. CityScape is at 1 E. Washington St. The event will again feature jazz saxophonist Azar Lawrence along with a lineup of local, national and international jazz artists, like Nayo Jones, Kerry Campbell.
Highly influenced by jazz legend John Coltrane’s sound and harmonic approach, Lawrence has performed with McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.
Other performers include soul jazz music artist Papa John DeFrancesco; Carlos Rivas, founder and director of Mex-Sal, one of Arizona’s most prestigious Latin groups; jazz saxophonist Kerry Campbell; jazz vocalist Nayo Jones Carlos Rivas; the Phoenix Country Day School Varsity Jazz Band; and William “Doc” Jones, a jazz saxophonist and keyboard artist.
“Real Jazz” is a free event( standing room only). Event seating will be available for a 25.00 donation to the Nextstudeny Academy go to www.nextstudentmusic.com and make your donation TODAY. At Copper Blues for the first 100 people a VIP after party will be available for those who make a $100 donation to support the NextStudent Academy, a local non-profit that provides jazz education programming to schools.
