Volunteers Needed: 504 Magazine joins Mayor Landrieu’s in Calling Civic Leaders for Katrina 10 ‘Citywide Day of Service’

By on August 10, 2015

Dear Civic Leader,
Mayor Mitch Landrieu, City of New OrleansNearly ten years ago, on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, becoming the costliest disaster in United States history. As that fateful storm shrouded our city in darkness, the federal levee system protecting New Orleans failed, flooding eighty percent of our city and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.

Since Hurricane Katrina, volunteers from down the street and around the world have demonstrated an extraordinary spirit of service. We came together and are rebuilding our neighborhoods back better and stronger than before. We have made a lot of progress, but we have a long way to go.

As we approach the commemoration of the last 10 years of rebuilding, I am asking for you to participate and recruit your neighbors/groups to take part on Saturday, August 29, 2015 in the Citywide Day of Service, a city-wide rebuilding effort that will bring together the non-profit organizations, neighborhood associations, schools, corporations and other community partners that remain committed to New Orleans’ culture of volunteerism.

The Day of Service seeks to galvanize 10,000 volunteers for a massive, coordinated effort to complete critical projects and help individuals recover and rebuild in some of our most devastated neighborhoods. Our effort will culminate in a citywide event at the Smoothie King Center at 5:30 PM on the 29th. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the “Katrina 10: The Power of Community” event where we will honor those who have helped us rebuild, celebrate our heroic resilience, and focus our energies on the challenges which we still face so New Orleans can become the city that we always dreamed she could be.

To discuss your neighborhoods/organization involvement in our Katrina 10 commemoration, please join my team for a brief introductory conference call this Thursday, August 6 at 4:00PM.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact members of our Katrina 10 team at 504-658-4900.

Thank you in advance for your participation and for your civic leadership.

One Team, One Fight, One Voice, One City

Mitchell J. Landrieu,
Mayor
City of New Orleans
